In this way, it is claimed that evaluative and prescriptive conclusions can be drawn directly from factual evidence established by social science. This first set of arguments is sometimes described as ‘cognitive’, because it relates to beliefs.

The second set of arguments is non-cognitive, in the sense that it concerns other aspects of human life. It runs as follows:

If we establish that someone suffers from an unmet need, such as the absence of food, then it follows automatically, other things being equal, that action should be taken to meet this need.

In addition, if it can be shown that the frustration of a need is not only generated by some institution but is necessary for the reproduction of that institution, then the conclusion follows (other things being equal) that the institution should be changed.
